Verizon (NYS:VZ) has started testing its 5G wireless service.

VerizonThe upgraded cellular data offering is being tested in “real-world” conditions around the New York-based company’s headquarters. These include trying out the wireless service indoors and in moving vehicles.

If early results are any indication, Verizon’s 5G service will be successful as it offers enough bandwidth to stream 4K video, including virtual reality clips that require 17 simultaneous feeds. These are fiber-optics speeds over a long-range wireless link.

Verizon is testing the innovative Internet service as it co-founds the 5G Open Trial Specification Alliance, designed to form a common spec for 5G testing. It should create more test runs between now and 2018.

The company is still working on maintaining connections indoors and shrinking the technology so it can fit in your pocket. However, the company’s test runs could have Verizon’s 5G service up and running in 2017.

Earlier this month, AT&T (NYSE:T) began testing its own 5G wireless in Austin, Texas.

VZ stock is up 0.37% Monday.
