The partnership between Minecraft and Oculus Rift is almost here.
You still have to wait a few days until you can play the block-building game with a virtual reality headset, but there’s plenty to be excited about. Here are six things to know about Minecraft on Oculus Rift:
- The idea of putting the two together was masterminded by Minecraft creator “Notch” Persson about four years ago. It was almost discarded when Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) acquired Oculus. Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) rekindled the flame after it bought Mojang, creators of the game.
- Mojang’s Tommaso Checchi commented on the matter, promising that this combination will be released next week, on or before Aug. 19.
- The beta for Minecraft on Oculus rift is already available for PC users running Windows 10 (version 0.15.6), as well as on certain Mac operating systems.
- An update of the game will allow you to play the three-dimensional version of it.
- To combine the two, you will need to buy an Oculus Rift, which is the VR headset. It will set you back $599 and you will need a computer powerful enough to run the hardware.
- The device can be yours once the company catches up with the backlog of pre-orders. After that, mailing options include two-day shipping.
Minecraft has been making moves over the last four months, releasing a
Lego set inspired by the game, launching the game in China for the first time, and even creating a film version of the franchise.
