The NFL quarterback — who most recently played for the Denver Broncos — has been practicing his swing in a bid to become a two-sport athlete, joining the likes of Bo Jackson and Deion Sanders.

Here are seven things to know about the deal:

  • There were 28 Major League Baseball teams interested in Tebow, but the Mets ultimately earned his signature.
  • The decision to sign him was made by Mets general manager Sandy Alderson and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon.
  • The Big Apple club insists that the move is not a publicity stunt and they are genuinely interested in the former quarterback’s athletic prowess.
  • The deal is a minor league contract that will launch Tebow’s baseball career, which could lead to a promotion to the Majors depending on how he does.
  • September 19 marks the beginning of the athlete’s baseball days in Florida’s fall instructional league.After signing him, the Mets commented on why they chose to take such a risk–the team mentioned his strong character, competitive nature and his ability as an athlete.Tebow admits that the move will be difficult as baseball is not an easy sport, but he believes he is up for the challenge.

Tim last played baseball at a competitive level his junior year of high school, back in 2005, also in Florida.
