The Coca-Cola Co (NYSE:KO) has launched a new drink flavor called Coke Ginger in Australia.

The Coca-Cola Co, KO, Coke GingerCoca-Cola Ginger is currently limited to Australia and is part of The Coca-Cola Co’s effort to draw in consumers that are starting to turn away from sodas. The choice of a ginger flavor comes as Australians have increased consumption of ginger-flavored drinks by 6% in the last year.

The current popularity of ginger drinks in the country could mean that the move was a smart one for The Coca-Cola Co. If the drink performs well, it is also possible that it could be introduced in other parts of the world.

This is the first new flavor variant to the soft drink that The Coca-Cola Co has introduced in Australia since 2002, which is when Vanilla Coke came out. The current Coke Ginger offering is only available for a limited time, reports Business Insider.

The Coca-Cola Co says that the new Coke Ginger has just a hint of the additional flavor. This may not be enough to attract the attention of Australians that want a more prominent ginger flavor in their drinks. Interest in soda is also waning with the company stating that fizzy drink sales were down almost 1% in the 12 months leading up to June 30.

If Coke Ginger doesn’t take off in Australia, then The Coca-Cola Co may just try another flavor. Australasian bottler Coca-Cola Amatil said that there are currently several different flavors of the drink that are in the “pipeline.”

KO stock was up slightly as of Monday morning.
