New Taco Bell ‘Forbidden’ Menu Will Feature Black Rice

Taco Bell — owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. (NYSE:YUM) — is launching a new menu that will feature black rice.

Taco Bell

The fast food chain’s ‘Forbidden’ menu is its latest form of experimentation, which attempts to recreate something from the past and bring it to the forefront of the taco industry. One of the most important items of the menu comes in the form of black rice.

The item is truly ‘Forbidden’ as it is a food item that was reserved solely for the Emperor in ancient China, marking a delicacy that commoners could not imbibe in. Taco Bell will make a series of items with black rice, which is a healthy food with high levels of antioxidants.

Other Forbidden dishes include decadent fried pieces of avocado, sour cream, romaine lettuce, black beans, tomatoes, a “Forbidden sauce,” and your choice of ground beef, shredded chicken, grilled chicken or steak, rounding up a unique taco bowl or burrito.

If you choose the Taco Bell bowl, the container it comes in will be more high-end than your run-of-the-mill plastic taco bowl container.

“It’s clear that Taco Bell has a leg up on Chipotle with the new Forbidden Rice meals,” Foodbeast wrote. “The rice adds a great texture and flavor to the dish, which is complemented even further with the crispy yet creamy fried avocado pieces.”

YUM shares surged 0.2% Thursday.
