Disgraced Ex-Yahoo CEO Gets new Gig

Scott Thompson, ex-CEO of Yahoo (NASDAQ:YHOO) who left the company amid a swirl of controversy, has a new  job. Thompson was today named CEO of ShopRunner, a shopping network of merchants that began less than two years ago. Former CEO and ShopRunner co-founder Mike Golden will assume the role of company president.

Prior to leading Yahoo, which is now helmed by former Google (NASDAQ:GOOG) executive Marissa Mayer, Thompson served as the president of eBay‘s (NASDAQ:EBAY) PayPal.

“Joining ShopRunner is a tremendous opportunity to build on the strong foundation that the company has already established,” Thompson said in a press release. “While PayPal and ShopRunner are fundamentally different businesses, there are similarities in each of their success. Both companies are focused on building the broadest network of satisfied merchants by providing the value that creates a large and loyal customer community, creating a virtuous circle.”

ShopRunner has a strong connection to eBay. Two months shy of two years ago, eBay purchased GSI Commerce, which was founded by Michael Rubin. eBay then divested three businesses to Rubin — ShopRunner being one of them. The other two businesses are Rue La La and Fanatics. All three businesses are part of the company Kynetic, which is owned by Rubin.

Despite leaving Yahoo in disgrace, Thompson’s work at PayPal has been acclaimed by many. During his tenure with the company, PayPal’s user base grew from 50 million to 104 million active users across 190 countries.
