- The Winter Solstice in 2015 will take place on Monday, Dec. 21, 2015.
- It marks the shortest day and longest night in the Northern Hemisphere.
- The astronomical event will occur at exactly 11:48 p.m. ET, which is when the Northern Hemisphere leans furthest away from the sun.
- Following the Winter Solstice, days will start getting longer and nights will start getting shorter.
- The solstice occurs due to the tilt of the Earth’s axis.
- The tilt of the Earth’s axis is also what causes the different seasons.
- While the Northern Hemisphere experiences its shortest day and longest night on the Winter Solstice, its the opposite for the Southern Hemisphere.
- The North Pole has 24 hours of night and the South Pole has 24 hours of day during the Winter Solstice.
