  • Grapes: The Spanish put 12 grapes in their mouth at midnight, each grape representing a different month. If a grape is sour, that may mean a month will be rocky.
  • Lentils: The Italian believe that lentils bring good luck do to the fact that they’re shaped like coins.
  • Soba: The Japanese eat soba noodles on New Year’s as the signify a “lean and long life.”
  • Cakes: Cakes are eaten to represent the cyclical nature of life in different parts of the world. The Greek have vasilopita, France has galette des rois, Bulgaria has banitsa and Mexico has Rosca de Reyes.
  • Pickled Herring: Poland and Scandinavia adopt the pickled herring on New Year’s to attract prosperity.
  • Pork: Germans and Austrians eat pork on New Year’s, as possessing many pigs is a sign of wealth.
