Amazon.com, Inc. (AMZN) may be forced to give parents refunds for in-app purchases made by kids.
A federal judge sided with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and has ruled that Amazon charged accounts for in-app purchases that were made without letting the holder of the account know about it beforehand. The organization is now seeking refunds from the company as part of the lawsuit.
The lawsuit filed against Amazon first came about in 2014. It may force the company to refund in-app charges made from 2011, the year in-app purchases were introduced to its store, to 2014, which is when if updated permission to keep kids from accidentally making purchases through their parents’ accounts.
The FTC reached settlements over in-app purchases with Apple Inc. (AAPL) and
Alphabet Inc’s (GOOG,GOOGL) Google in 2014. This resulted in $50 million in refunds being returned to customers.
