‘Call of Duty’ Sales Top Hollywood’s Highest Grossers

Move over Hollywood. Video games are producing grosses that beat even Tinseletown’s glitziest blockbusters.

Activision Blizzard‘s (NASDAQ:ATVI) much anticipated Call of Duty: Black Ops II, released just over two weeks ago, generated sales of $1 billion in just 16 days, Bloomberg noted.

By contrast Avatar, James Cameron’s alien world blockbuster, took 17 days to reach pull in the same amount in ticket sales when it hit the silver screen three years ago.

Call of Duty’s continuing success comes as good news for Activision, which shook off last year’s sluggish video game sales to beat Wall Street estimates for this year’s third-quarter earnings and revenue.

In fact, sales generated by the entire Call of Duty video game franchise have exceeded world wide ticket sales produced by even Hollywood’s heaviest hitters, the Star Wars and Harry Potter series of films.

Call of Duty games can be played on various gaming consoles, including Microsoft‘s (NASDAQ:MSFT) Xbox, Sony‘s (NYSE:SNE) Playstation 3  and Nintendo‘s (PINK:NTDOY) Wii U.

Shares of Activision rose fractionally in Thursday morning trading.
