On the Calendar: On Thursday, Apple (AAPL) announced that its much-watched annual Worldwide Developers Conference will take place at San Francisco’s Moscone West Center during the first week of June, CNET notes. The WWDC will run between June 2 and June 6. Apple often debuts new software and products during the conference and Apple executives occasionally use the event to drop hints about upcoming technology. Apple developers can register to buy tickets to the conference on the WWDC website; each ticket will cost $1,599, but the opportunity to buy tickets this year will be determined by random drawing. Last year, WWDC tickets sold out in less than an hour. At last year’s WWDC, Apple showed off its dramatically redesigned high-end Mac Pro. This year’s WWDC could feature a preview of Apple’s new iOS 8, which is expected to launch with the debut of new iPhones in the fall. Apple may also use the 2014 WWDC to introduce a refresh to its MacBook Air line.

Still the King: Apple’s iPhone 5s remained the top-selling smartphone at major U.S. wireless carriers last month, AppleInsider notes. A survey from Canaccord Genuity analyst T. Michael Walkley shows the iPhone 5s topping March sales at the four largest U.S. wireless carriers. The Samsung Galaxy S4 was came in second at AT&T (T), Sprint (S) and T-Mobile (TMUS), but was bumped to third place by the HTC One (M8) at Verizon (VZ). Apple’s grip on the top spot could be in jeopardy as Android smartphone owners look to upgrade to the Samsung Galaxy S5 next month. Walkley says that a trend toward early device upgrade plans at the major wireless carriers could help boost iPhone sales when Apple releases its new iPhone 6 later this year, despite an increasingly mature and saturated smartphone market in the U.S.

Green Power: A major environmental advocacy group has included Apple among “green energy innovators” in a new report. Greenpeace noted Apple’s plans to use renewable energy in its operations. “Apple’s aggressive pursuit of its commitment to power the iCloud with 100% renewable energy has given the company the inside track among the IT sector’s leaders in building a green Internet,” the report says. Greenpeace also hailed Apple’s use of solar farms at its new data centers. “Apple’s commitment to renewable energy has helped set a new bar for the industry, illustrating in very concrete terms that a 100% renewable internet is within its reach, and providing several models of intervention for other companies that want to build a sustainable Internet.” Apple received three A’s and a B in Greenpeace’s grading system. The report marks a shift in Greenpeace’s evaluation of Apple. Greenpeace has been critical of Apple’s renewable energy plans in the past.
