One of Tesla Motors’ (TSLA) Model S cars was stolen and split in half during a crash that caused it to explode.

tsla-teslaThe Tesla Model S was stolen and raced around the streets of Los Angeles. The thief was pursued by police after the theft, but they had to stop the chase after crashing into a divider. The stolen car got up to 100 mph when it wrecked. The force of the crash sent the thief flying from the vehicle and split it in half, reports New York Daily News.

The Tesla thief was rushed to a hospital in critical condition along with another driver that was part of the wreck. Other injures were reported, including four people whose conditions are unknown. One half of the car ended up in the streets of the city while the other half was wedged between two walls. The car was split down its width, New York Daily News notes.

“We’ve asked to take a look at the vehicle as soon as that’s possible,” Simon Sproule, a Tesla spokesman, told Bloomberg. “There aren’t so many S’s involved in major crashes, and certainly not quite like this one, so we absolutely want to have a look to understand what happened.”
