Amazon (AMZN) is preparing to reboot its Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) fleet.

amazon-amazon-ec2-aws-amzn-stockThe Amazon EC2 reboot will start on September 26, 2014 at 7:00 p.m. Pacific Time. It will end on September 30, 2014 at 4:59 p.m. Pacific Time. The reboot is being forced on users of the service due to a security issue that has been discovered, reports ZDNet.

According to the Amazon EC2 maintenance page, the typical reboot only takes a few minutes to an hour to be completed. There are two different types of reboot that the company performs. One is a reboot of a user’s virtual instance and the other is a reboot of a physical server holding an instance. Performing either type of reboot will leave the service down for some time.

Users of Amazon EC2 should note that a reboot doesn’t make any changes to their configuration settings. They also won’t need to launch new instances after the reboot. These reboots are typically used to apply small updates to security, reliability and other aspects of the service.

AMZN shares were down 1% as of Thursday afternoon.
