5 Worst Sectors to Avoid This Week

This week, the independent power and renewable electricity producers, metals and mining, water utilities, energy services and independent power and renewable electricity producers sectors look weak according to Portfolio Grader.

The reit sector is lagging this week with 77% of its stocks (126 out of 163) rated a “sell”. Out of the reit stocks, Hatteras Financial (HTS), DDR Corp. (DDR) and Health Care REIT, Inc. (HCN) are near the bottom with F’s. Hatteras Financial is the worst performer in this sector, with a 32.5% decline in the last 12 months.

With 67% of its stocks (61 out of 91) rated “sell,” the metals and mining sector is struggling this week. Among metals and mining stocks, Newmont Mining Corporation (NEM), Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR (GFI) and Schnitzer Steel Industries, Inc. Class A (SCHN) are lingering near the bottom with grades of F. Over the last 12 months, Gold Fields Limited Sponsored ADR is the worst performer in this sector, with a 75.1% decline.

The water utilities sector is dragging, with 67% of its stocks (4 out of 6) rated a “sell”. Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR (SBS), SJW Corp. (SJW) and Aqua America, Inc. (WTR) are dragging down the sector overall, each earning a low grade of D. The worst performer in this sector is Companhia de Saneamento Basico do Estado de Sao Paulo SABESP Sponsored ADR, which saw its price sink 84.9% in the last 12 months.

The energy services sector looks weak, with 61% of its stocks (39 out of 64) rated a “sell”. McDermott International, Inc. (MDR), ION Geophysical Corporation (IO) and Frank’s International NV (FI) are all currently earning F’s. ION Geophysical Corporation is performing worst overall in the sector, with a 54.1% decline over the last 12 months.

The independent power and renewable electricity producers sector is trailing behind others this week, with 60% of its stocks (6 out of 10) rated a “sell”. TransAlta Corporation (TAC), Empresa Nacional de Electricidad S.A. Sponsored ADR (EOC) and Calpine Corporation (CPN) are pushing the sector down with F grades. Overall, TransAlta Corporation is the poorest performer in this sector. Its share price has dropped 47.2% in the last 12 months.
