Tesla Motors Inc (TSLA) CEO Elon Musk knows how to announce new products and services in a way that gets people excited. The announcement of the Tesla Model S D was no different.

tesla motors tsla stockThe news may not have been as exciting as some were hoping, but an all-wheel drive Model S D will change the direction of the electric vehicle market moving forward.

There are many things you need to know about the Tesla Model S D announcement, but we’re going to dig into three of the most important points:

Model D will actually get improved range with all-wheel drive. With gas-powered vehicles that’s tough to pull off, as the addition of AWD almost always negatively impacts MPG. But the Model S is not a typical car. The D will actually improve its range by 10 more miles — about an additional 3.5%. Even more impressive is the fact that Tesla Model S D is even more powerful, being able to go from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds.

“D” may be more important than “A.” An all-wheel-drive Model S D is worth writing home about. The A that Musk was speaking of is a grouping of “autopilot driving technology.” This includes long-range sonar, long-range radar, and a camera that can recognize images. For techies, this is huge news.

Autopark. This feature is not new to the automotive industry, but it is a nice addition for Tesla (especially a car that can already do almost everything).

Some people were disappointed, as they believed Tesla was going to announce the development of a self-driving car. While Musk didn’t take a page out of Google’s (GOOG) book, the Tesla Model S D has the potential to be a definite game changer.

As of this writing, Chris Bibey did not hold a position in any of the aforementioned securities.
