Consumer Reports is warning of higher levels of inorganic arsenic in rice than previously though following recent tests.
Arsenic has been linked to several different types of cancer, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. The new Consumer Reports test results has resulted in it releasing new guidelines for eating rice.
Consumer Reports advises that children under five should be limited to the amount of rice they are exposed to. This includes rice milk, cakes, crackers and other snacks.Brown rice was found to contain higher levels of inorganic arsenic than white rice.
The data has prompted Consumer Reports to release a guide for how much rice is safe to eat in a week. The guide allows for 7 points of rice a week. As an example, one cup of a rice drink is worth four rice points for a child and two for an adult.
