Facebook (FB) has purchased startup Wit.ai for an undisclosed sum.

Wit.ai was founded 18 months ago and specializes in voice recognition software. The startup already has a community made up of more than 6000 developers and the platform will remain free even after it joins Facebook.

The Wit.ai team said in its blog post that it believes that it can help Facebook with its goal of connecting its more than 1.3 billion users. The startup said that the social media company has what it needs to take its voice recognition software to the next step.

Wit.ai will move to the Facebook headquarters located in Menlo Park. The move will include the its three co-founders and several other employees of the startup, reports The Wall Street Journal.
