According to the study, which was conducted by the University of Michigan, users of Facebook that are passive in their viewing can become more envious and depressed. Passive use of the social media platform means that these user aren’t posting, sharing or communicating with others on the service. Active users didn’t show signs of envy or depression after using the service, reports IBNLive.

The study was conducted with the help of 80 undergraduate students. The first part of the study had these students spending 10 minutes actively or passively using Facebook. The second part of the study included text messages being sent to students. These messages included links to questionnaires that would help researchers gauge their emotions and were used to determine if they had active or passive lifestyles, IBNLive notes.

A similar Facebook study was released last month. This study had similar results and found that comparing lives on the social media service could have negative effects on the user.
