Hurricane Danny is on the horizon, marking the first Atlantic hurricane of the year.

Hurricane Danny

Here are five things to know about it:

  • The storm is compact and it has strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane on Thursday morning.
  • Although Danny is approaching, it is still more than 1,000 miles east of the eastern Caribbean islands.
  • The future of the hurricane is unknown but it looks like it could reach the Leeward Islands such as Guadeloupe and St. Kitts and Nevis as a Category 1 hurricane by Monday.
  • Danny’s winds are only 10 miles from center with its maximum sustained winds at 75 mph.
  • It is no surprise that this year has produced a low number of hurricanes considering the strong influence of El Niño, which has strong wind shears in the Atlantic that hinder cyclone development.

Where do you think Hurricane Danny will end up?
