Netflix (NFLX) is preparing to release better quality streams that take up less data.

netflix-nflxNetflix is re-encoding its entire catalog of movies and TV shows to make sure that each one shows up at its best without draining data. It’s doing this with the help of new bandwith-saving technology that it has been working on for the last four years, reports Variety.

Anne Aaron, video algorithms manager at Netflix, explained the process by comparing My Little Pony to The Avengers. She said that MLP is a less strenuous show to stream due to its flat colors. Avengers on the other hand is filled with explosions and small details. This new system dedicates less bitrate to animated shows, but still streams them at 1080p, Variety notes.

Netflix has released a complete breakdown of its new encoding process on its blog. There are even images using the old and new processes so that customers can compare the differences between them.
