Google AI (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) has beaten the ‘Go’ world champion in a five-game series.

google AILee Sedol battled the tech giant’s AlphaGo program and got swept in the series, losing three consecutive games plus a fourth one to boot. The game carried a prize of about $1 million.

The games were very close but AlphaGo succeeded by taking more time than his human counterpart. “I didn’t expect to lose,” said Sedol. “[But] I didn’t think AlphaGo would play the game in such a perfect manner.”

He resigned in all four games despite trying playing the game in both conservative and aggressive manners. Google AI learned the game without much human help, studying a database of about 100,000 human matches and playing against itself millions of times.

The machine reprogrammed itself and improved based on theories of how the human brain works.

GOOG stock is up 1.1% Wednesday. GOOGL stock is up 1.4%.
