Microsoft, Facebook Team Up on Undersea Internet Cable in the Atlantic

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) have struck a partnership to build a cable network in the Atlantic Ocean.

microsoftThe two companies are working on a subsea cable that will operate from under the sea and help meet the demand for high-speed cloud and Internet services.

The line will be called “MAREA” and it will be complete by October 2017. The cable will be 6,600 kilometers long and it will be able to carry 160 terabits per second.

Underwater data centers are slated to avoid a problem that most data centers, which is cooling. Marine energy sources will be used to keep the cable from overheating.

MSFT stock is down 0.4% Thursday. FB stock is up 1.3%.
