Chipotle Mexican Grill, Inc. (NYSE:CMG) will be introducing its new chorizo meat option to all United States restaurants on Oct. 4.

Chipotle, CMG, Chorizo

The chorizo offered by Chipotle is a sausage made with Responsibly Raised chicken and pork. The meat is spiced with three different types paprika, toasted cumin and chipotle peppers. It is then seared on a hot grill.

Chipotle is expanding its chorizo menu item to all restaurant locations in the United States after testing it out in five different markets earlier this year. Steve Ells, founder, chairman and co-CEO of CMG, said customer’s reaction to the spicy sausage was “overwhelmingly positive” in the test areas.

The company’s customers will be able to order chorizo in burritos, tacos, burrito bowls and salads. The new menu item can also be combined with other signature ingredients offered by the Mexican restaurant chain.

Chipotle’s decision to introduce chorizo on Oct. 4 was a planned one. Oct. 4 is National Taco Day and many restaurants are celebrating with special deals and offers. Adding a new menu item on that day could help in draw in more customers that are interested in how it taste.

Chipotle’s Responsibly Raised chicken and pork are part of an effort to bring high-quality ingredients to customers. The pigs used for the pork are raised “on pasture or in deeply bedded barns.” Chickens that are Responsibly Raised aren’t given antibiotics. They are also kept on a vegetarian diet.
