Facebook, Inc. (NASDAQ:FB) — which owns the app — announced that it will allow its one billion users to make video chat calls on WhatsApp. Here are nine things to know about it:

  • The company first beta-tested the app for several months, working out the kinks to ensure that it works for as many users as possible.
  • It is a cross-platform wonder as it can be accessed on iOS devices, as well as Android and Window Phones.
  • In order to make a video call, tap the call icon at the top right corner of a chat. You can then choose to make a voice call or video call. Tapping “video call” begins a video chat.
  • You can choose to use either your rear camera or your front one on your device.
  • A mute option allows you to prevent any sounds from your end to reach your other party.
  • Tapping on the red phone icon finishes the call.
  • You can also access video chat on WhatsApp’s Web app without having an account and registering for a login.
  • It is available for more than 1 billion people who use the app.
  • The company hopes that users from all sorts of backgrounds with all types of devices are capable of using the app. Hopefully in most parts of the world.

FB shares gained 2.1% on Tuesday.
