Apple Inc. (AAPL) News – iMac Computers Get Rebirth

Here are the latest Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) headlines and rumors for July 27, 2010. Big news today as Apple officially announces new iMac desktop computers.  The new multi-touch trackpad rumored last week was also officially unveiled today. Meanwhile, a lawsuit is filed against Apple complaining of overheating iPads.

AAPL Relaunches Line of iMac Desktop Computers With Multiple Intel Core SKUs: Ending weeks of speculation and rumors about exact specs and launch dates, Apple Inc. finally unveiled their new line of iMac computers. Coming in four SKUs varying in processor horsepower and speed, the new iMac is available with either dual-core Intel (NASDAQ: INTC) Core i3 or i5 processors, or the beefy quadruple core Intel Core i5 or i7 processors, providing users with the fastest all-in-one desktop computers on the market. The dual-core machines begin at a processing speed of 3.6 GHz and the Intel Core i7 blasts at speeds up to 2.93 GHz. The new iMacs will all come equipped with an ATI Radeon HD 5750 graphics card, allowing the desktop machines to output beautiful video, 3D gaming, and other graphics intensive applications. The new line of iMacs are priced from $1,199 to $1,999. The line will ship alongside a new 27-inch LED display tailor made for the new desktops. The screens will include built-in speakers, USB ports and other amenities. The 27-inch screen will be priced at $999. With the continued success of AAPL’s line of mobile products, including the iPhone 4, the iPad, and the company’s line of MacBook laptop computers, this refresh of the iMac line should only help strengthen Apple’s grip on the tech market as we head into the Holiday 2010 season.

New Multi-Touch Trackpad From Apple Officially Announced: As rumored here on InvestorPlace last week,  Apple has announced a new model of its popular line of trackpads, this time with a multi-touch interface. The new trackpad, which is powered by two AA batteries and connects to a machine via wireless Bluetooth communication, costs $69.  Incorporating the same features as the built-in trackpad in AAPL’s line of MacBook Pro laptop computers, the Magic Trackpad supports two-finger scrolling and recognition of up to four digits on the trackpad. The new trackpad should prove to be a popular accessory alongside the new line of iMac desktops.

Lawsuit Filed Against Apple Over Overheating iPads: A complaint filed in Oakland, California last week claims that Apple’s successful knee-top computer, the iPad, overheats and doesn’t work properly in high temperature environments. The claim states that since the iPad “overheats so quickly under common weather conditions” that it “does not live up to the reasonable consumer’s expectations of Apple.” The complaint, which seeks class action status in addition to unspecified damages, also claims that, when activated in direct sunlight, the tablet computer “turns off, sometimes after minutes of use.” AAPL has sold some 3.27 million iPads since the device’s release in April, and while the technology manufacturer has come under fire for consumer dissatisfaction over its new iPhone 4, consumer and Apple shareholder satisfaction with the iPad has been almost unanimously positive. Whether or not the lawsuit gains any traction, it’s guaranteed that the iPad will continue to sell remarkably well for the rest of the fiscal year and beyond.
