Google Creates Honeycomb Buzz

The major theme of Google’s (NASDAQ:GOOG) press conference on Wednesday to show off its Honeycomb update for its Android mobile software platform was the integration of multiple tools, meaning things like chat, calendars, and email tools are active all the time, rather than being restricted to individual apps.

The event was certainly promising for Google as well as Motorola (NYSE:MMI), maker of the Xoom tablet that was used to highlight Honeycomb.

The Xoom appears like it will be, at the very least, a functional competitor with Apple’s (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPad. The improvements to Google’s Android app store also should help improve developer support for the platform.

All Android apps can now be bought through the website and automatically downloaded to any Android device. Google also confirmed that “in-app” purchases are being broadly instituted for apps sold through the Android market. Disney (NYSE:DIS) Mobile was highlighted as an early partner, with in-app purchasing demonstrated in a new Disney Radio app.

All that said, until Motorola announces a price for the Xoom and Google announces Honeycomb’s implementation on a wider variety of devices, it’s difficult to say if these new features will be enough to help the company catch up to Apple. With the iPad 2 expected to debut in just a few months, there’s the possibility that Honeycomb will be upstaged before it’s even in consumers hands.

At the time of publication, Anthony John Agnello did not own a position in any of the stocks named here.
