General Motors‘ (NYSE:GM) mini-car, the Chevy Spark, will soon have an all-electric version.
The Spark EV will run on a lithium ion battery, and its electric engine, which produces 130 horsepower, can push the the car from 0 to 60 in 8 seconds. That’s significantly faster than the gas-powered Spark. It’s also the first North American all-electric vehicle to offer SAE Combo Fast Charge so that the battery can be mostly recharged in 20 minutes.
Regarding price, GM is touting that the Spark EV will be one of the cheapest all-electric vehicles available. While not mentioning specifics, GM says the Spark EV will cost less than $25,000, when discounted for the a $7,500 federal tax credit.
While a mini-car — the Spark EV measures only 12 feet long — it still has amenities for those who want them. Leather seats and GM’s OnStar system are a part of the model on display. There’s also a smartphone-based entertainment system that allows drivers to use their Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhone for navigation and music.
The all-electric version of the Spark is debuting this week at the Los Angeles Auto Show and goes on sale next summer in select markets.
