FBI Director James B. Comey is giving Google and Apple flak over the level of encryption being offered by the companies to users of their smartphones. He claims that the encryption would be difficult to get through and that it will put users of the devices “beyond the law,” reports The Washington Post.

“Apple will become the phone of choice for the pedophile,” John J. Escalante, chief of detectives for Chicago’s police department, told The Washington Post. “The average pedophile at this point is probably thinking, I’ve got to get an Apple phone.”

The comments concerning the increased encryption come after Apple and Google announced the features in their new devices. Users of iOS 8 already have high levels of encryption available to them and Google will be setting encryption to default with its release of Android L next month.
