A case of the Zika virus has been confirmed in the United States.

zika-virusThe U.S. Zika virus case comes from a man in Houston, Texas that caught it during a trip to Latin America. The chance of the virus spreading across the country is rare and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) claims that there is no reason to worry, reports NBC News.

Here’s what the CDC has to say about the Zika virus.

  • The virus is carried by the Aedes mosquito.
  • It majorly appears in Africa, Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, and the Americas.
  • Puerto Rico reported its first case of the virus in December.
  • The virus has never been locally discovered in the U.S. and has only appeared via travelers.
  • There’s no vaccine or medicine for the Zika virus.
  • The virus only rarely requires hospitalization.
  • It’s symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain, and red eyes.
  • It may be connected to birth defects in children born to pregnant women infected with the virus.
