Kesha is facing a tough legal battle with producer Dr. Luke that just got tougher.
The pop star has been attempting to get out of her record contract with Dr. Luke — real name Lukasz Gottwald — over claims of abuse. Kesha sued him in 2014 for allegedly drugging and raping her a decade ago.
A New York judge ruled against Kesha Rose Sebert on Friday as she sought a preliminary injunction that would release her from her contract with the producer and allowing her to record other music.
“You’re asking the court to decimate a contract that was heavily negotiated and typical for the industry,” New York Supreme Court Justice Shirley Kornreich told Kesha’s attorney Mark Geragos.
The ruling stems partially from the fact that Dr. Luke has invested $60 million in the singer’s career. “My instinct is to do the commercially reasonable thing,” the judge added.
The judge said the evidence against Dr. Luke is insufficient, as there are no hospital records or other medical evidence to support Kesha’s assault allegations.
The 2014 lawsuit claims she was “sexually, physically, verbally and emotionally abused” for nearly 10 years by Dr. Luke, starting when she was 18 and she signed a contract with his Kemosabe Records label (a subsidiary of Sony [NYSE:SNE]) in 2005.
SNE stock is down 1.13% Friday.
