The 2024 race to the White House is about to take an important turn. Since Vice President Kamala Harris procured the necessary number of delegates to clinch the Democratic Party’s nomination, speculation has been rising as to who her running mate will be. Many names have been floated, ranging from California Governor Gavin Newsom to Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg and Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. But now the race seems to have been narrowed down to a few key candidates as the nation waits for updates on the most likely Kamala Harris running mates.

This comes at a pivotal time for financial markets as well. Many stocks fell today as negative energy swept over markets. Crypto prices are down as well, even after former President Donald Trump’s recent appearance at Bitcoin 2024. Harris hasn’t issued a statement on crypto yet, but she will likely do so soon if she wants to avoid alienating potential voters. This raises questions as to where her running mate will stand on digital assets as well.

Where Do the Likely Kamala Harris Running Mates Stand on Crypto?

Where do Harris’ potential VP picks stand on crypto? That question will likely be on many investors’ minds as Harris and her team narrow down the most likely running mates. While the U.S. waits for her campaign to make this key announcement, let’s take a look at what Harris’ top candidates have said about crypto.

  • Josh Shapiro: The Pennsylvania governor is the most likely candidate for Harris’ VP, according to prediction markets. DailyCoin reports that “while Shapiro has not been a vocal crypto advocate, a change in the classification of cryptocurrencies by state regulators following his election has left some hopeful.” That could be a promising sign for crypto investors if Shapiro is chosen.
  • Mark Kelly: The Arizona senator is also being hailed as a top candidate among the likely Kamala Harris running mates. According to Decrypt, while Kelly hasn’t spoken much on crypto, both he and Whitmer have “political allies” with pro-crypto stances. This suggests that either could easily signal openness to crypto.
  • Pete Buttigieg: Buttigieg hasn’t issued a direct take on crypto. But in 2020, he did state that Bitcoin (CCC:BTC-USD) should be “treated as a commodity” when it came to regulatory policies. Given his standing as a favorite among the Silicon Valley elite, though, Buttigieg’s policies may favor tech and, by default, crypto.
  • J.B. Pritzker: The governor of Illinois has a long history of success in the business world. Pritzker has also been a crypto advocate in the past. In 2021, he helped announce crypto platform CoinFlip’s new headquarters in Chicago. “I’m absolutely thrilled you are doubling down in Illinois,” Pritzker said of the firm.
  • Gavin Newsom: One of the most prominent voices in the Democrat Party outside of the White House, the California governor has a pro stance on crypto. In 2022, he issued an executive order to ensure that his state “engages early and proactively with nascent blockchain and Web3 industries.” Later that year, Newsom’s administration released a detailed report on the importance of crypto, Web3 and more.
