Alphabet Inc (GOOG,GOOGL) is no longer offering free Google Fiber internet in Kansas City.
New customers coming to Google Fiber no longer have the option of getting its free 5 Mbps internet
after paying a $300 construction cost. However, the company has introduced a new price option that brings 100 Mbps to customers for $50 and it doesn’t include the construction fee.
The new change to Google Fiber could result in more customers signing up for the service. It’s a Goldilocks situation where the free internet may have been too slow and the 1 Gbps may have been too fast, but the 100 Mbps option may be just right for many customers, reports PCWorld.
Google Fiber customers that have already paid the $300 construction fee and signed up for the free internet option won’t have to upgrade to the new $50 plan. The tech company said that it will honor its previous statement of allowing them to keep the service for seven years.
