December Supermoon 2016

One of the world’s most exciting events in the great, cosmic unknown is the supermoon, which refers to the time in which the full moon is occurring, while also being at its closest approach to Earth during its monthly orbit.

The concept is usually rare but 2016 has seen plenty of these. During the supermoon, you can see the full moon as much as 14% bigger and 30% brighter than usual.

The moon will rise at 4:31 p.m. ET from the east. The exact time of the supermoon will take place at 7:05 p.m. ET, when the moon will be at its brightest and biggest, thanks to the optical illusion that is a supermoon.

You will be able to see an especially large moon during both moonrise and moonset, which will take place at 7:38 a.m. on Wednesday. The moon sets in the West.

You can see the supermoon in any place, but the best you can do is find a dark, poorly lit area such as the country where the phenomenon will be accentuated more. The next supermoon will be on Dec. 3, 2017.

Coinciding with this year’s supermoon is a meteor shower known as the Geminids, which will be hidden from plain view due to the supermoon overpowering it for most people. However, you may catch a glimpse of the meteor shower at 2 a.m. if you manage to stay up.
