Bull’s Eye Report: Tripadvisor (TRIP)

Try TRIP for end-of-summer profits

By Dave Moenning, Proprietor of StateoftheMarkets.com

At StateoftheMarkets.com, we strive to “own the best and ignore the rest” in our equity portfolios. Toward this end, each day we search our database for a “top stock” (a top rated company in terms of earnings strength as well as company and industry performance) that presents a strong technical “set up” and a good entry point.

In short, when our equity team is looking to add a stock to one of our portfolios, the “bull’s eye” stock shown below is generally their first choice.

Why We Like The Stock:

Tripadvisor (TRIP) is our most compelling buy today due to the fact that it is one of the highest-rated stocks (in terms of earnings strength and company/industry performance) in our top-rated sub-industry. Internet etail has been the place to be this year, and it’s not hard to see why with charts like Priceline.com (PCLN), Yahoo! (YHOO), Netflix (NFLX), and TRIP occupying the space. TRIP has been trending higher since October of last year, while rarely pulling back along the way. Though the stock is straight up on a weekly basis, we like its short-term upside as well. TRIP recently hit highs north of $80 in mid-August before pulling back to the $70 region. What we like best about this stock was the fact that it stopped right at $70, based, and popped right back up, holding the gap-up price level that it jumped to back in July. Currently, the stock looks to be trending higher once again, so we would pick it up here before it’s off and back to $80.

We Would Be Buyers:

At the current price (~$74.56), or on a pullback to $71-ish.
