However, Macy’s (NYSE:M) went one step further, putting it closer to $50 … thanks to a typographical error.
In a matter of leaving one digit off a price, Macy’s advertised the 14-carat necklace for just $47 instead of a planned $479. UPI reports. The deal was marked as a “Super Buy” in the catalog that was sent to hundreds of people. One customer who tried to take advantage of the deal was told that the entire inventory of necklaces at his local store was sold out. He attempted to order two of them to be shipped to his house, but later received a message about the typo and his order was canceled.
Now that the typo has been caught, Macy’s is controlling the damage by placing correction signs up in the company’s stores.
A spokeswoman told a local television stations that, “When the mistake was caught, signage did go up in the fine jewelry department and on store doors alerting customers that a mistake had been made. For those customers who bought the necklace at the $47 price, they were fortunate.”
