Dubbed CarPlay, Apple will unveil the new system at the Geneva International Motor Show in Switzerland this week. CarPlay allows iPhone owners to communicate with their device through their vehicle’s existing digital interface. Apple says the system will allow iPhone users to interact with their devices with a minimum of distraction, PC Magazine notes.

CarPlay will be available this year in automobiles from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. Apple will eventually bring CarPlay to vehicles from BMW, Ford (F), General Motors (GM), Honda (HMC), Hyundai, Jaguar, Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota (TM). Apple showed off an early version of CarPlay at its Worldwide Developers Conference last year.

Here are 6 things to know about CarPlay from Apple:

  1. Drivers can use voice commands to interact with Siri, the iPhone’s voice assistant, or use their car’s touchscreen.
  2. The system can make phone calls from a user’s contact list and listen to voice mails.
  3. CarPlay will read incoming notifications and text messages and allow users to dictate text message replies.
  4. Drivers can use Apple Maps to get spoken turn-by-turn directions and traffic data.
  5. GPS navigation and route instructions will also appear on a vehicle’s display.
  6. Users can access their music library and iTunes Radio.

AAPL stock climbed modestly in Monday morning trading. Apple shares have climbed about 25% over the past year.
