iPhone 6 Launch Weekend Sets Record

The annual Apple (AAPL) iPhone launch weekend is always a spectacle of lineups and millions of smartphones changing hands at a rate that other manufacturers would kill for. And last Friday’s launch of the iPhone 6 launch was no different.

I received my iPhone 6 on Friday without having to brave an Apple Store line-up (pre-ordering makes a lot of sense to me), but demand was so high for the new, bigger iPhones that things got a little wild at times.

The CBC is reporting that RCMP officers were called in to control the crowd lining up outside an Apple Store at a Vancouver mall after iPhone 6 hopefuls overwhelmed the 10 security guards trying to keep things orderly.

And that’s in Canada, famous for polite and orderly lines.

Apple says it set a new record with the iPhone 6 launch, selling 10 million units of its new iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

To put that in some perspective, let’s look back to some other smartphone launches and the numbers they pulled in.

iPhone 6 Launch Compared to iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c

In 2013, Apple launched two different new iPhone models for the first time: the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

While the iPhone 5c wasn’t exactly the cheap iPhone everyone was hoping for and the iPhone 5s wasn’t the bigger iPhone needed to take on increasingly popular Google (GOOG) Android phablets, Apple still set a record when it reported weekend sales on September 23.

Nine million iPhones were sold. A new record then, but one that fell to the iPhone 6 launch numbers.

iPhone 6 Launch Compared to Original iPhone

Apple’s first iPhone was released in 2007, an era when its 3.5-inch display seemed huge.

Back then, Apple only used a two-day launch weekend in its calculations instead of the three days it counts now, but the numbers seem quaint compared to the iPhone 6 launch, regardless.

We’re talking about 270,000 iPhones. Even if you tweak the number for an additional day to even things out and make it 405,000 that’s the number of iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units Apple moved in less than three hours this year.

iPhone 6 Launch Compared to Samsung Galaxy S5

Samsung’s (SSNLF) Galaxy S5 launched in the months between the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 6, helping to reduce competition for consumers’ flagship smartphone dollars.

The company has been cagey about details for its launch weekend sales, although Business Insider’s Steve Kovach tracked down a Korean press release where the company said it did better than last year’s Galaxy S4 launch weekend.

“Did better” can mean a lot of things, but we do know that in the first three days it was on sale, the Galaxy S4 sold 4 million units.

Even a hefty increase by the Galaxy S5 would come nowhere near those iPhone 6 launch numbers.

iPhone 6 Launch Compared to BlackBerry Z10

BlackBerry (BBRY) was the company that owned the smartphone market before Apple introduced the iPhone and started the consumer frenzy for the devices.

So it’s worth comparing how the Z10, the device expected to lead that company’s turnaround — with a touchscreen interface and the new BB10 operating system — fared in comparison to the iPhone 6 launch.

Even a year and half after the BlackBerry Z10 launch, it’s tough to track down concrete numbers.

The device was released in the U.K. and Canada first, and the U.S. release was plagued by reports like this one from the Wall Street Journal’s Will Connors that Z10 returns may have exceeded sales at some retailers.

Whatever the actual number may have been, it wasn’t good — BlackBerry ended up taking an inventory charge on the Z10, followed by lay-offs of 40% of its workforce. Quite a contrast to the iPhone 6 launch.

iPhone 6 Launch Compared to Amazon Fire Phone

Amazon (AMZN) released its first smartphone two months ago, picking a launch window that freed it from competing against the highly anticipated iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus.

At $199 on contract, the Fire Phone (reviewed here) was more expensive than expected, but it did offer innovative new features like its Dynamic Perspective 3D display and Firefly point-and-order shopping.

However, consumers clearly weren’t prepared to skip the iPhone 6 or a proven Android smartphone in favor of Amazon’s first crack at the market.

Sales numbers for the launch were never published … and with good reason. According to smartphone usage estimates, only about 35,000 Fire Phones are in use (or as many units as Apple sold in the first half hour of the iPhone 6 launch).

You can now pick up a Fire Phone — complete with a year of free Amazon Prime membership — for just 99 cents on contract.
