United Parcel Service (UPS) and FedEx (FDX) are liming last-minute deliveries by retailers.

fedex-ups-fdxUPS and FedEx started limiting the amount of last-minute air express deliveries due to a large increase from retailers. The increases in express deliveries went beyond agreed upon terms between the delivery services and retailers. The services have asked eBay (EBAY) to scale back deals to avoid more last-minute orders, reports MarketWatch.

“As we’ve moved through the peak season there have been some shifts in demand and customer needs as a result of slowdowns at the West Coast ports,” Bonny Harrison, a FedEx spokeswoman, told Reuters.

FedEx and UPS are limiting express deliveries from retailers as part of an effort to avoid a similar situation to Christmas 2013. Last year an estimated 2 million items shipped with express status didn’t make it to their destinations in time due to high demand for speedy shipping, MarketWatch notes.
