Uber is at the head of another PR disaster after it raised prices during a hostage situation in Sydney on Monday.

uber-sydneyA cafe in the central business district of Sydney was the site of a hostage situation involving 40 people being held by a gunman. The ride service announced via Twitter (TWTR) that it would be increasing fares in that part of the city in an effort to attract drivers to enter the area, reports USA Today.

This earned Uber criticism from people as fare prices increased to high amounts. At its peak, people trying to get out of the central business district of Sydney via the ride service were paying $80 a trip. Following the outrage, the company offered to escort people out of the area for free, USA Today notes.

Uber has been the subject of negative press lately. The service is now banned in India following a rape allegation in Delhi and has also been banned in Spain and Thailand.
