Ben Carson is adding his name to the list of 2016 presidential candidates.

The 63-year-old is perhaps best-known for his career as a neurosurgeon and a writer. Now he is seeking the Republican nomination for US presidency.

Here are 10 things to know about him:

  • Ben Carson was born in Detroit, Mich. to Sonya and Robert Solomon Carson, a Seventh-day Adventistminister.
  • He received a BA in psychology from Yale University.
  • He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan Medical School.
  • Carson became the youngest major division director in Johns Hopkins Hospital when he was appointed director of pediatric neurosurgery at age 33.
  • In 1987, he became the first surgeon to successfully separate conjoined twins.
  • He’s written six books, including an autobiography.
  • Carson retired as a surgeon in 2013.
  • He became a weekly opinion columnist for The Washington Times in 2013.
  • He also writes for American CurrentSee, an online publication for conservative African-Americans.
  • Carson announced his 2016 presidential candidacy on May 3, 2015.
