Ford (F) has been given the green light to test its driverless cars in California.

ford-driverless-carsFord will be allowed to test one of its 2016 Fusions on public roadways in California as part of the state’s Autonomous Vehicle Testing Program. The vehicle won’t be on its own during these test. It will be carrying an operator that will monitor it and a systems expert, reports Los Angeles Times.

Ford said that it wants to develop a driverless car that will be able to handle emergency situations on the road. It doesn’t want the car to have to rely on the driver to handle these types of events. The company plans to start testing the driverless 2016 Fusion early next year, L.A. Times notes.

Baidu (BIDU) recently announced its intentions to have driverless shuttles running in China by 2019. The U.K. is also allowing self-driving cars to be tested. Alphabet’s (GOOG,GOOGL) Google started testing its own autonomous cars on public roads earlier this year.
