A Black Moon will grace the night skies this Friday night, but you won’t be able to see the moon during the lunar event.

Black Moon

A Black Moon happens when a new moon occurs twice during the same month. This means that there are two nights in that month where the moon isn’t visible. The lunar event that will take place on Friday will only be for those living in the Western Hemisphere.

The Black Moon will start at 8:11 p.m. Eastern Time this Friday. The rare event is caused by lunar cycles not perfectly syncing up. Another one will occur next month, but it will only be for people living in the Eastern Hemisphere.

The Black Moon occurring this Friday also follows another rare lunar event. The first new moon of this month was a Ring of Fire. This is the name given to a new moon that occurs during a solar eclipse, reports ScienceAlert.

The Black Moon shares a similarity with the Blue Moon. A Blue Moon is what happens when there are two full moons during a single month. This makes the Black Moon and Blue Moon opposites of each other.

The upcoming lunar even is a bit of a rare one. It only happens once every 32 months. The reason for the difference in the time between the Western Hemisphere’s and Eastern Hemisphere’s version of the event has to do with timing. When the new moon makes its way into the Eastern Hemisphere on Friday, it will already be Oct. 1, which means it isn’t a Black Moon.
