Disney Going Full-Bore in January

Multi-tentacled giants like Walt Disney (NYSE:DIS) can be difficult to keep tabs on. Between its media lines, resorts and parks, cruise lines and consumer products, Disney always has plenty of irons in the fire. However, January has been a particularly busy month for the company, with Disney announcing several initiatives for the U.S., China and the Internet. Among Disney’s recent moves:

  • Disney announced it will be expanding its award-winning concept store design throughout the U.S., and it will be in 12 countries by the end of 2012. In addition to retail, the stores tout an “interactive” experience. Thirteen new or remodeled locations are expected to open in the U.S. this year.
  • One of the new concept stores also will be opening in Shanghai, China, this year, as part as an initiative to expand throughout the country. The company plans to open 25 to 40 Disney Stores within three years, according to Reuters. The Shanghai store location will complement the city’s Disneyland theme park, which the company started construction on last year.
  • In hopes of getting Mickey fans straight from the cradle, Disney this week launched DisneyBaby.com. The website sells Disney products for babies, and is exclusively sponsored by Kimberly-Clark’s (NYSE:KMB) Huggies brand. However, it also includes interactive features, including Disney Baby Magical Moments, which allows parents to upload photos and other media.

Also for 2012, Disney will be focusing on its resorts here at home, with the first phase of its estimated $425 million expansion of Fantasyland in the Magic Kingdom expected to open early this year. The expansion, which will double the size of Fantasyland, is the largest in the theme park’s history.

Disney is trying to rebound from a weak 2011 that saw DIS shares perform flat compared to a 5%-plus gain for the Dow Jones Industrial Average. Disney stock is up 4.4% year-to-date.
