Dodge Durango to Become a Cop Car

Don’t be surprised if your next speeding ticket (oh, that’s right, you never speed!) comes from an officer stepping out of a Dodge Durango. While you’d be just as upset no matter what kind of cop car caught you, the folks at Chrysler would be tickled if a Durango figured in your agony.

Chyrsler, now controlled by Italy’s Fiat (PINK:FIATY), is joining its Detroit rivals General Motors (NYSE:GM) and Ford (NYSE:F) in selling a specially modified SUV model to police departments in the U.S. Chrysler is also targeting the Durango at fire departments.

If the plan goes accordingly, the brawny and, yes, intimidating-enough, SUV would join its stable-mate Dodge Charger sedan as a regular on the law-enforcement scene.  Up until a few years ago, Ford’s Crown Victoria was the mainstay of police departments nationwide. But with the demise of that model, others contenders have been scrambling to fill the void.

As Peter Grady, vice president of fleet operations, said in a statement:  “Adding Durango to our current Dodge Charger Pursuit and Ram 1500 Special Service vehicles allows us to offer a full range of fleet sedan, SUV and truck options to law enforcement and government agencies.”

The Detroit Free Press adds that new police version of the Durango “is available in rear or all-wheel drive and is being offered with beefed-up components such as a heavy-duty brake package, heavy-duty battery, larger-output 220-amp alternator and heavy-duty water pump and engine oil cooler.”

Another reason to think twice next time before putting your pedal to the metal.
