The purchase of the .app domain name by Google is the most that any company has ever paid for a domain. The domains are auctioned off by ICANN as new names are created. The current round of auctions started in June 2014 and have included domain names such as .buy, which was bought by Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN), and .tech, which was snapped up by Dot Tech, reports Business Insider.

The .app domain name isn’t the only one Google is after. The company also bid on the .tech domain before Dot Tech got it. It has also applied to bid for .docs, .android, .free and other domain names being auctioned off by ICANN, Business Insider notes.

According to Charleston Road Registry, the company owned by Google that bough the .app domain name, it will use the name to create a space for app developers to create websites. It also said that the domain name will offer an easy way for app developers to form a community on the internet, reports BBC News.
