Walt Disney Co (NYSE:DIS) and at least six other retailers have agreed to get rid of on-call scheduling.
The practice in question has been deemed unfair for many years by employees of companies that use it. On-call scheduling causes a logistical nightmare for some as it can call a worker right before a shift, even if they have the day off.
On-call scheduling is especially difficult to comply with for workers who have children as it is difficult for them to schedule day care on a moment’s notice.
Joining Disney as a company that will eliminate on-call scheduling there are a number of other companies, including Aeropostale Inc (OTCMKTS:AROPQ), PacSun, Zumiez Inc. (NASDAQ:ZUMZ), Carter’s, Inc. (NYSE:CRI) and others that believe the move is unfair.
The decision that many companies made comes following a probe by the New York attorney general’s office that examined how on-call scheduling affected workers in a negative manner. It is unclear if these retailers made the move in response to the probe, but it could set a precedent that other companies will follow in the coming months.
Starbucks Corporation (NASDAQ:SBUX) got rid of on-call scheduling almost immediately after the probe was initiated, avoiding any legal troubles that could be forthcoming with it.
Victoria’s Secret (NYSE:LB), J. Crew and Urban Outfitters, Inc. (NASDAQ:URBN) all have eliminated on-call scheduling as well.
DIS shares surged 0.5% Tuesday.
