PC and tablet makers know students and parents are shopping for back to school, so they tend to offer big discounts or freebies this time of year.

And that’s on top of any educational pricing they may offer. Sometimes you can save more going direct than by shopping retailers’ back-to-school sales … You just need to know where to look.

To make that part easier, here are five of the best computer deals for the back to school 2017 shopping season.

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) may have angered some of its professional users when it jacked up the prices for the new MacBook Pro last fall, but the company is usually pretty good to students.

Apple offers educational pricing year-round that can save students up to $300 on a new Mac, as well as discounted pricing for iPads. But the company also offers a yearly back to school promotion.

For 2017, students get a free pair of Beats wireless headphones when they buy an eligible Mac or iPad Pro for school. Considering the Bluetooth headphones go for up to $300 a pop, that’s a pretty solid deal.

Apple is on the list a second time because some of the best laptop deals for students — at least students who are Mac fans — are offered year-round at Apple’s online refurbished store.

The company doesn’t promote it and it’s not exactly easy to find on the Apple website, but the Apple refurbished store is worth checking out. Products are Apple certified, in mint condition and with the same warranty as new versions. The content is constantly changing so you have to keep an eye on it, but Apple offers iPads, Macs, MacBooks, iPhones and even refurbished Apple TVs.

Students can definitely score real savings here. At time of writing (remember, models offered change daily), that included a 27-inch 5K iMac for $1,269 (the base model is currently $1,799) and a 13-inch MacBook Pro with Touch Bar for $1,439 (also currently starting at $1,799).

If you shop around for the best computer deals, back to school shopping doesn’t need to break the bank.
