Google (NASDAQ:GOOG,NASDAQ:GOOGL) is reportedly storing information regarding your location even when you turn the company’s mapping applications off.

Google

The company has previously been honest about the fact that it asks for your permission when you Google something, such as a restaurant in order to get a map that leads you from your location to the place. However, it appears as if Google may be tracking where you’re going even when turned offline.

An investigation conducted by the Associated Press discovered that a number of Google services on Android and iOS devices continue to follow where you are even when you’ve changed your privacy settings in a way that should prevent the company from tracking your location.

Computer-science researchers at Princeton University conducted the investigation at the publication’s request and unveiled these findings. This discovery contradicts Google’s claims that changing your privacy settings will stop them from tracking you.

“You can turn off Location History at any time. With Location History off, the places you go are no longer stored,” the company writes. Google apparently has a snapshot of where you are when you simply open its Maps app, while any automatic daily weather updates on Android phones knows exactly where you are.

GOOG stock fell about 0.2% on Monday, while GOOGL shares slumped roughly 0.3% on the day.
