Let freedom ring.
Ford (NYSE:F) is unveiling its 650-horsepower Shelby GT500 Mustang this weekend at the Chicago Auto Show, and the 200-mph behemoth comes with a slight upgrade from the 2012 model: the open air.
The GT500 Mustang convertible comes a year after the coupe’s debut in Los Angeles, and will mark the 20th anniversary of Ford’s Special Vehicle Team. SVT’s official launch came in 1992 at Chicago, when Ford unveiled the 1993 SVT Mustang Cobra and SVT F-150 Lightning.
According to Ford, the Shelby sports a 5.8-liter supercharged V-8 that bested the 2011 and 2012 models’ lap time at Sebring International Raceway by 3.5 seconds.
“The Shelby GT500 convertible is every bit the performer that the coupe is,” said Kerry Baldori, SVT Global Performance Vehicles chief engineer, in a press release. “All of the significant changes we made in the program were instrumental in delivering a convertible that could really shine on the track but can still be driven on a daily basis.”
The GT500 convertible comes with a Performance Package, but a Track Package is available that will include external engine oil cooler, rear differential cooler and transmission cooler.
The 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 will be built at AutoAlliance International Plant in Flat Rock, Mich.
Ford recently is coming off its biggest quarterly profit in company history, announced late last month, and F shares are up nearly 20% year-to-date.
