Pope Francis’ Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy has started.
The Jubilee of Mercy is a Catholic event that takes place every 25 years and is announced by the Pope, in this case it was Pope Francis. This year’s Jubilee of Mercy is different because it wasn’t predetermined. It will last from the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to the Feast of Christ the King, which had it starting on Dec. 8 and it will finish on Nov. 20, 2016.
The Jubilee of Mercy also sees the opening of the Holy Doors. These doors only open during this time and there are seven across the world. However, for Pope Francis’ Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, Bishops will be able to declare their own Holy Doors. Passing through these doors grants a person Jubilee Indulgence.
“Let us henceforth entrust this Year to the Mother of Mercy, that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey: our penitential journey, our year-long journey with an open heart, to receive the indulgence of God, to receive the mercy of God,” St Peter Basilica said when announcing Pope Francis’ Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy earlier this year.
